Alex grew up in a place called Annangrove, which is close to Sydney, Australia. There was not really an active music community in Annangrove at the time, but there were strong musical influences at home. His siblings also played violin, viola and piano and his parents enjoyed listening to music. He mostly was shaped by classical music and although he found this to be a great influence, it was a bit limiting in terms of exposure to the different musical genres.
His first real introduction to the music world outside of the home environment was when he entered high school at Sydney Grammar School. Alex won a music scholarship to SGS and attended from 1984-1989. As a music scholar, Alex had a lot of responsibility in the music department. Alex was lead cellist of the school orchestra and traveled to Europe as part of the touring orchestra. He also played in several string quartets and played solo cello at school concerts. Alex studied3 unit music for his HSC which included music performance. Alex also played piano and won several school competitions.
Although he loves the cello and is passionate about playing, the cello has only every been about having fun and has never been pursued professionally. We suspect this is because he never really was that good at the cello, but watch the his cello video below and make up your own mind!
Alex ultimately choose to enter the medical profession and became a gastroenterologist instead of a professional musician.
